| | | Ganewatte Medicinal Plant Gardens (GMPG) is situated in the North Western Province about 15 miles away from Kurunegala. Being located in the intermediate zone, it offers an ideal site for cultivating a large number of medicinal plants. The garden is 52 acres in extent. About half of the land is occupied by a coconut cultivation. The medicinal plants grown are mostly arboreal. The commonest trees are nelli, munamal, sandalwood, tamarind and eth-demata. | | GMPG has a work force of 09 laborers headed by an Agricultural Instructor. The following activities are carried out at present. | | 1. | Maintaining a germplasm collection of a large number of medicinal plants. | | 2. | Collecting and selling medicinal plant products such as nelli, tamarind, aralu | | | and vanilla. | | 3. | Harvesting and selling coconut. | | 4. | Providing educational facilities to students of native medicine, school children, | | | NGOo and general public. | | 5. | Maintaining nurseries for propagation of medicinal plants. | | | | |  | | | The following educational activities are also carried at GMPG on: | | 1. | Identification of medicinal plants. | | 2. | Propagation of medicinal plants. | | 3. | Ex-situ conservation of medicinal plants. | |  | | | | | | | | | | |
